café for contemporary art

Odds and Sods

Posted in posts by Tim, Recent Complicities by Tim on June 8, 2011

Hey guys! Long time no talk. I’m back from Montréal and back at work…I was planning on being back earlier but I got sidelined when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. I promptly developed dry sockets and was put on synthetic morphine for a week. Needless to say, working would have been more than a little difficult at that point.

Anyway, what’s new at cafca? A lot of things, actually. First, for the coffee geeks: we got new burrs and a new adjustment ring for our Anfims, and new precision filter baskets for the Synesso. It amazes me how changes like these affect the coffee we serve!

Speaking of coffee, right now we are offering 4 single-origin brews from 49th: Colombia Los Idolos Microlot, El Salvador La Providencia Estate, and two Ethiopian Yirgacheffes: Kochere and Organic Amaro Gayo. They’re all really nice, but right now I’m really digging the Amaro Gayo and La Providencia on Brewt and Aeropress. Stop by while I’m working sometime and I’ll make you one if you ask really nicely 😉

Next up: the art frontier. Our current exhibit is from a very talented young artist named Dylan Humphreys. It’s got a very urban and improvised feel to it – I like it a lot. It’s one of my favourite exhibits we’ve had so far. Drop by and see the space; it looks incredible!

And that’s a quick summary of what’s been going on lately. We’ve got some really cool live music and even a “rockumentary” lined up for later this summer, so stay tuned!

LOL,

Tim

Café Myriade

So I made the trek out to Café Myriade today….It was indeed a trek, but definitely worth it. Chatted with Anthony and the two baristi on shift about their machine, coffee in general, business, you name it. It made me miss making coffee and interacting with people in that way.

With regards to that last post, the main issue brought up there has been fixed….

Recognize the bag, anyone? Café Myriade’s roastery is none other than 49th Parallel! That bag is the Tanzanian Karmaro Microlot…can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning 😀

Anthony treated me to a delicious espresso and the very talented (and very lovely) Cici – spelling unknown – made me a fantastic cappuccino. Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me, so I couldn’t take any photos of the café (or the space). Next time, I promise!

LOL,

Tim

Musings of a Gingerkid

As the sweat beads trickle

Vince and Lindsay

Oh the horror.  Sweat beads trickled as the grand masters of espresso took their sips.  Nervous barista texts flew as we were honoured with a visit from 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters’ gang of incessant cuppers.  The man with the golden tongue took the photo.

Adieu, Adieu!

“Adieu, adieu my good friends all,

And be kind to [the Synesso]”

-“Bonnie Barbara Allen”, Traditional Scottish Ballad

Unfortunately I must take my leave of you all! Sad, yes. Not really “adieu”, though, more of an “au revoir” – I’ll be back at Christmas, so look for me to be putting in some time then. My last shift was last night and you can read all about it here. Also to be found on that page is the story of the last of Sammy Piccolo’s WBC blend!

It’s been fun, cafca. See you soon.

LOL,

Tim

PS – For those of you who don’t know, I’ve started a blog to keep my friends and family up with life in Montreal. It can be found here.

PPS – If you got the joke in the edited version of “Bonnie Barbara Allen” above, you just earned yourself big points in my books!

Now Open

Posted in Uncategorized by tyler057 on April 7, 2009

We are now open!  Finally.

Our opening exhibition: WE LOVE YOU COMRADE NAVIN, featuring Navin Party projects, Navins of Bollywood and Quotations from Comrade Navin is up. And warmly accompanying it are a few opening-appropriate works in our café including: the billboard painting and photo document of Navin Rawanchaikul’s 2001 PS1/Public Art Fund project, I  Taxi; Steve Hubert’s The Dive; and two little works by Scott August, Winter Panda and Bull on Pink.

Meanwhile, the café is serving great coffees roasted by 49th Parallel and Intelligentsia.  Our current espresso, for those of you who are interested, is 49th’s Organic.  And if you do stop by soon, try the Ethiopian Aricha on our Clover.  It is really a coffee to write home about.  If you are hungry come have a panini we just started selling them a few days ago.

We are located at 140 East Esplanade in North Vancouver BC, just a short walk from the Seabus terminal at Lonsdale Quay and not far from the Presentation House Gallery where I understand this weekend they are opening Phot(o)bjects, a new show curated by Bob Nickas.
